Winter Activities in Nantahala

Winter Activities in Nantahala

During the winter months, you may want to make a cup of hot cocoa and cozy up on the couch in front of the fireplace, or even prepare a delicious meal in the fully-equipped kitchens in the cabins and luxury yurts of stayNantahala, but Mother Nature still has so much to offer when it comes to planning activities for your winter getaway.

Winter Hiking

Sometimes, the best way to experience Mother Nature is by venturing through it on foot! Winter hiking can be some of the most rewarding experience ever because the weather isn't harsh and crowds are typically at a minimum. Here are some of our favorite hiking trails.

  • Rainbow Falls

Hike the 150 ft. Rainbow Falls located in North Carolina's Gorges State Park

  • Bartram Trail

Named after the naturalist, William Bartram, this trail follows his nearly 4-mile route during his visit from 1773 through 1777 as he explored the area. Be sure to visit the waterfall!

  • Whiteside Mountain

This nearly 2-mile hike is quite moderate and is perfect for hiking, walking, and, depending on the season, bird watching.

Fishing and the Kokanee Salmon Run

Lake Nantahala is a perfect fishing spot for beginner and expert fishermen alike. You're sure to find many types of fish in the beautiful, crystal clear lake like the trout; however, Lake Nantahala is known to be the only home to the Kokanee salmon. Why? Lake Nantahala is a man-made lake, and therefore, this particular type of salmon is a landlocked variety that spawn every autumn. The excitement begins between the months of August and December during their spawning season. You'll see all the fish swim upstream. In addition to other fishermen, this type of year can also attract other wildlife who are looking for a meal as well.
